Elizabeth Clare Prophet - ( New Age ) Religious Leader / Guru - Epilepsy - Alzheimer's disease

Elizabeth Clare Prophet  (April 8, 1939 – October 15, 2009) was an American spiritual author and lecturer who was the leader of The Summit Lighthouse and Church Universal and Triumphant, a New Age religious movement which gained media attention in the late 1980s and early 1990s while preparing for potential nuclear disaster...

Prophet was born in Red Bank, New Jersey.... She attended Antioch College in Ohio...transferring to Boston University in September 1959. She received a bachelor of arts degree in political science ... From the age of nine, Prophet suffered from absence seizures, a form of epilepsy, which worsened to include tonic-clonic seizure in 1988.

After visits to the Catholic Church, the Jewish synagogue and every Protestant church in Red Bank, she attended Methodist Sunday School before finally settling on Christian Science at age 9, attracted in part by its emphasis on healing and her desire to overcome her epilepsy...

On April 22, 1961, her group invited Mark Prophet, who claimed to be a messenger for the Ascended masters, to speak in Boston..... afterwards, she asked Mark to train her to be a "messenger". Mark and Elizabeth were married in 1963, had four children, and together administered The Summit Lighthouse, which Mark had founded in 1958.

The Summit Lighthouse, started by Mark Prophet, was transformed by his second wife, Elizabeth Clare, into the Church Universal and Triumphant. The group took ideas from Buddhism, Hinduism and Kabbalah, and blended them with the beliefs of a 1930s group known as the "I AM" Religious Activity that used chanted decrees. There was the belief in "light," spiritual energy that could be invoked from above and manipulated in different ways, thrown, poured and directed. There were also specially chosen messengers who had exclusive links with "ascended masters," and shared gleaned wisdom with followers.Elizabeth Clare Prophet assumed that responsibility at an early age, her daughter said."She took on the role of messenger at age 24, which is pretty young to making those kinds of decisions," Erin Prophet said. "And from that moment, she had to be able to project that image." source : In memoir, daughter of CUT leader comes to grips with where church went wrong

...On February 26, 1973, Mark Prophet died of a stroke. Elizabeth assumed leadership of their organization, which began an interest in survivalism, based on instructions she said Mark gave her the night before his stroke. She organized survival training on a 240-acre (0.97 km2) property outside of Colorado Springs, which they had purchased with the intention of using for a headquarters...

In 1986, Prophet relocated her headquarters to the Forbes Ranch, which she had renamed the Royal Teton Ranch. It was here that she made her more well-known prophecies including the possibility of a nuclear war between the superpowers.

Beginning in 1986, as she was leaving Los Angeles, Prophet began predicting a possible first-strike nuclear attack by the Soviet Union and urged followers to prepare for this possibility by building fallout shelters and storing food and other necessities for survival.

She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in November 1998. The leadership of her church subsequently passed to a board of directors. In 1999, deteriorating health led Prophet to retire from the church. In 2000, she entered full-time nursing care for Alzheimer's disease in Bozeman, Montana. She died October 15, 2009 at the age of 70...

tonic-clonic seizures information :

What are they like? Here's a typical story from a parent's view: "These seizures frighten me. They only last a minute or two but it seems like an eternity. I can often tell Heather's going to have one because she acts cranky and out of sorts. It begins with an unnatural shriek. Then she falls, and every muscle seems to be activated. Her teeth clench. She's pale, and later she turns slightly bluish. Shortly after she falls, her arms and upper body start to jerk, while her legs remain more or less stiff. This is the longest part of the seizure. Finally it stops and she falls into a deep sleep."

How long do they last? Generally, 1 to 3 minutes. A tonic-clonic seizure that lasts longer than 5 minutes probably calls for medical help. A seizure that lasts more than 30 minutes, or three seizures without a normal period in between, indicates a dangerous condition called convulsive status epilepticus. This requires emergency treatment. ..

Alzheimer's disease information :

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's disease accounts for 50 to 80 percent of dementia cases. Alzheimer's worsens over time. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer's, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Those with Alzheimer's live an average of eight years after their symptoms become noticeable to others, but survival can range from four to 20 years, depending on age and other health conditions....
